SRS microscopy in chemistry and life science – our review

9 June 2022 – „Biotechnology Advances” releasedStimulated Raman scattering microscopy in chemistry and life science – Development, innovation, perspectives by: Krzysztof Brzozowski, Ewelina Matuszyk, Anna Pieczara, Jakub Firlej, Anna Maria Nowakowska & Małgorzata Barańska.

Despite SRS methods and applications, the researchers introduced their innovative setup from Chemistry Department at Jagiellonian University, Kraków. The team has build an SRS system with commercially available components. The central part of the system is the Lazurite – a picosecond laser created by polish company Fluence.

Detailed protocol for label-free RS imaging of PBMCs

4 January 2022 – “Journal of Advanced Research” publishes article titled Raman-based spectrophenotyping of the most important cells of the immune system by: AleksandraBorek-Dorosz, Anna Maria Nowakowska, Patrycja Leszczenko, Adriana Adamczyk, Anna Pieczara, Justyna Jakubowska, Agata Pastorczak, Kinga Ostrowska, Marta Ząbczyńska, Karol Sowinski, Wieslaw I. Gruszecki, Malgorzata Baranska, Katarzyna Maria Marzec, and Katarzyna Majzner.

Quantification, analysis and recognition of biochemical features of T and B lymphocytes isolated from human blood was possible using label-free Raman spectroscopy imaging. That proves that this methodical approach can support the initial diagnosis or tracking the clinical course of several human diseases. We have developed a detailed protocol for measurement, data collection, pre-processing and analysis, which allow for differentiation of PBMCs populations obtained from a statistically significant number of healthy donors. Reliable discrimination of cells is possible based on spectral markers of carotenoids, nucleic acids, proteins and lipids, detected at the sub-cellular level.

“Cancers” Journal: RS has the potential as a diagnostic tool in clinical practice

31 October 2021 – “Cancers” journal publishes our research paper titled Towards Raman-Based Screening of Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia-Type B (B-ALL) Subtypes authored by: Patrycja Leszczenko, Aleksandra Borek-Dorosz, Anna Maria Nowakowska, Adriana Adamczyk, Sviatlana Kashyrskaya, Justyna Jakubowska, Marta Ząbczyńska, Agata Pastorczak, Kinga Ostrowska, Malgorzata Baranska, Katarzyna Maria Marzec, and Katarzyna Majzner.

The team shared their research on Raman specra of Normal B-cells vs three different subtypes of Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia B-cells. Normal B-cells were characterized mostly by bands assigned to nucleic acids and proteins, whereas three subtypes of ALL appeared to contain a higher lipid content. The results lead to the conclusion that RS has the potential as a diagnostic tool in clinical practice.

First time observation makes it to the cover

11 December 2020 – “J. Phys. Chem. C” journal publishes our article titled Spontaneous versus Stimulated Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering of Liquid Water by: Paulina Filipczak, Marcin Pastorczak, Tomasz Kardaś, Michał Nejbauer, Czesław Radzewicz, and Marcin Kozanecki.

We have observed for the first time the surface-enhanced (SE) signal of water in an aqueous dispersion of silver nanoparticles in spontaneous (SERS) and femtosecond stimulated Raman (SE-FSRS) processes with different wavelengths of the Raman pump (515, 715, and 755 nm).
